Coordination of Benefits (COB) occurs when 2 or more health plans cover the same individual.
If you are covered by more than one health plan, coordination of benefits (COB) rules may apply. COB rules tell health plans which health plan pays first (or is “primary) for you or your covered dependents. COB rules help make sure that the provider you see isn’t overpaid for your care. COB rules can lower your out-of-pocket expenses.
Your PHP Certificate of Coverage has detailed information on COB rules. COB rules apply to your PHP medical benefits but not to your PHP pharmacy benefits. You may receive a notice from us asking for information on other medical insurance for you or your covered dependents. Please follow the directions on the notice and return it to PHP promptly. If the other insurance changes for you or your covered dependents, make sure to contact PHP promptly. It’s also important to let your providers know so they can update their records.
Helping us maintain this information helps ensure that your claims are paid correctly the first time, with no unnecessary delays.
